About Dr. Maria T. Patino

I have had a passion for animals and a fascination with medicine ever since I was a little girl. I was born in Colombia and was raised in a farm surrounded by all kinds of animals. I enjoyed waking up at 5 AM to feed the farm animals and milk the cows. After my beloved farm pets were fed, I would return home to have my own breakfast. My family and I migrated to Florida during my teenage years. I graduated high school in the 11th grade and was part of the inaugural class of the Miami Dade Honors College. I continued my education at Florida Atlantic University Honors College. Before finishing my Bachelor degree, I had already been accepted to Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. I graduated with a Bachelor in Biology in 2008 from Florida Atlantic University and as a veterinarian from Tuskegee University Veterinary School of Medicine in 2010. I have been employed in small animal veterinary general practice centers providing excellent care for many beloved pets and their families.

I became interested in Acupuncture from a personal medical experience. I was wheelchair-bound after my pregnancies, and conventional medicine failed at providing pain relief and mobility without the negative side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. Therefore, I decided to give alternative medicine a try. Within a month of my initial acupuncture session, I was walking without assistance, and was able to hold and care for my babies by myself. I became fascinated by the Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine belief that body is an integrated, energetic structure in which energy flows smoothly, and thus disease is the result of energy flow disturbance and imbalance in the body. In 2015, I began my Traditional Chinese Medicine career and graduated from Chi University (former Chi institute of Chinese Medicine) to officially obtain my certification in Acupuncture. I decided to start a mobile practice of acupuncture in which pets can experience the healing benefit in the comfort of their homes. I have deep interest in benefiting geriatric pets that, due to ambulatory challenges or chronic medical conditions, have a hard time getting to the veterinarian's office.

Safety And Contraindications

Acupuncture is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified practitioner. Very few negative effects have been found in clinical cases. In spite of everything, there are certain contraindications of needle insertion based on the location of the acupoint or health status of the patient, such as: inserting a needle directly into a tumor or open wound, using a needle at acupoint at the umbilicus, the use of certain points in pregnant patients, the use of electro-acupuncture on patients who suffer from seizures, and hemo-acupuncture on weak or geriatric animals.
